Tips for a Smooth Student Move to the Netherlands

Tips for a Smooth Student Move to the Netherlands

Here are some practical tips to help you prepare:

  • Plan early – Book your move a few months ahead, most of all at busy times like September.

  • Stay organised – Keep a checklist of all you need, from papers to your own things.

  • Pack smart – Use small boxes for heavy items and large boxes for light things.

  • Keep the key things close – Keep passports, university papers and valuables with you, not in the moving van.

  • Plan your budget – Think about moving costs, rent and living costs when you plan your move.

If you follow these steps, you will feel more in control of your move. Together with skilled help, they make the whole thing much smoother.

How to Prepare for Your Student Removals to the Netherlands

Getting ready makes a big difference to how smooth your move feels. Start by clearing out. Only take the things you really need. Selling, giving away or recycling what you do not need cuts costs and makes packing quicker.

Elite Moving helps students with free packing materials, including strong boxes and greener wrapping. We also give expert tips on how to organise your things. For example, label each box clearly with your name and what is inside. This makes unpacking in the Netherlands much easier.

Next, check your papers. Students from abroad must apply for visas or residence permits well before they move. Each university also has its own rules for signing up and for housing, so it is best to sort these out early.

For moves to Holland from abroad, it is important to understand the customs rules. Some items, such as certain gadgets or banned goods, may not be allowed in. Our team guides you through this step, so you will not face delays at the border.

A Typical Timeline for Student Movers Netherlands

To give you a clearer idea of how your move works, here’s a simple timeline:

Get a quote – Contact us for a price made for you, based on where you are going and how much you have.

Packing day – Our movers turn up with greener packing to wrap your things safely.

Transport – Your things travel safely by road or by sea, based on where your move starts.

Delivery – We unload and help you unpack in your new Dutch home.

This step-by-step plan makes sure no detail is missed. When you work with skilled movers, you avoid common problems such as delays, broken items or hidden costs.

Why the Netherlands is a Great Place for Students

Moving abroad is about more than just the move itself. It is about the life you will enjoy there. The Netherlands is one of the best places in Europe to be a student. Cities like Amsterdam, Utrecht and Rotterdam have great universities, many cultures and lively student life.

Public transport works well, and cycling is part of daily life. Lots of people speak English, which makes it easier to settle in. With its rich past, lively nightlife and friendly people, the Netherlands gives you a time as a student you will never forget. A reliable mover lets you enjoy this new chapter without worrying about the details of the move.

Student Removals to the Netherlands: Your Questions Answered

Do students moving to the Netherlands need customs paperwork after Brexit?

Yes. The Netherlands is in the EU and the UK is not, so your things must clear customs. You will usually need a list of what you are sending and proof of ID. Students who move there to live may have extra steps. Rules can change, so we check the current rules for you and help fill in the forms.

Is a shared load a good choice for a student move to the Netherlands?

Often it is. Most students do not have enough to fill a van. With a shared load, your boxes travel with other customers' goods, so you only pay for the space you use. It can take a little longer than a van just for you. If your term starts very soon, a dedicated van may suit you better.

Can you deliver to a Dutch student room up steep, narrow stairs?

Yes. Many Dutch homes have very steep, narrow stairs, and student rooms are often on upper floors. We pack in boxes small enough to carry up safely and take apart desks or beds where needed. Tell us the floor and whether there is a lift, so we plan enough time and people.

Can you store my things in the UK until my Dutch student room is ready?

Yes. Student rooms in the Netherlands do not always free up on the day you leave home. We can collect early and keep your things in our secure storage near Wallington. When your room is ready, we deliver to your Dutch address. This also works if you come back to the UK for the summer.

What should a student pack for the move to the Netherlands?

Bring clothes, bedding, study books and a laptop, plus your passport and university letters. A bike may be worth sending, as cycling is the normal way to get about. Leave bulky items that are easy to buy there. Carry your documents and laptop in your hand luggage, not in the boxes we move.

The Elite team were brilliant!!! We were so pleased and impressed with the service. 1. They listened to what we wanted and made it happen on the dates we needed. 2. They offered a very competitive price compared to multiple other quotes that I got with a discount for early booking - and they stuck to that price. 3. They brought a smart black new-ish lorry and trailer that had plenty of capacity for our estimate. 4. Scott and Dan were a brilliant team (extra people came to help load and unload) with clearly lots of experience in driving, navigating customs, loading and unloading with lots of care for our belongings, packing efficiently, and all the right equipment including a piano trolley! 5. On top of everything else, Scott and Dan were always very polite, took care to keep the houses clean, and took pride in their jobs and were very professional. We would absolutely go to them again without looking anywhere else.

Elite Moving recently moved us to our new house and they were brilliant. Efficient, polite, professional, careful and just all round really helpful (they also moved us and reassembled our furniture in one day when a competitor told us they would need at least two!). I don't know how we'd have got through the day without them and also felt they were really good value. Would not hesitate to recommend.
