Removals to the Netherlands from the UK

Elite Moving carries out removals to the Netherlands for households, students and businesses from London, Surrey and the South East. Whether you are heading to a canal house in Amsterdam, a new-build in Utrecht or an office in Rotterdam, we collect, pack, ship and deliver with one team. This page helps you pick the right type of move and explains what to expect on the Dutch side.

Choose the right removal service

The best option depends on how much you are moving, how fixed your dates are, and your budget. These are the services we run to the Netherlands most often:

Dedicated express

A vehicle and crew just for you, on the dates you choose. Best for full homes and tight timelines. See dedicated express removals to the Netherlands.

Part load and shared

You pay for the space you use and share the vehicle with other moves going the same way. Best when you can be flexible on delivery. See part load removals to the Netherlands.

Furniture only

For just a few large pieces, such as a sofa, wardrobe or dining set, with taking apart and putting back together. See furniture removals to the Netherlands.

Office and business

Planned around your working hours, with labelled crates and IT kit handled with care. See office relocations to the Netherlands.

Student moves

Small loads for students off to a Dutch uni, with boxes and wrap included in the price. See student removals to the Netherlands.

White glove

Extra care for art, antiques and high-value items, with custom packing. Read why white glove helps.

Crossing the North Sea

There are a few ways to get a removal van from England to the Netherlands, and we pick the one that suits your pick-up address and your new town. Direct ferries run from Harwich to Hook of Holland, from Hull to Rotterdam Europoort and from Newcastle to IJmuiden near Amsterdam. For moves that start in London and Surrey, the short crossing from Dover to France, then a drive north through Belgium, is often just as quick.

Whichever route we use, your belongings stay loaded and secured in the same vehicle from your old front door to your new one. They are not unloaded and reloaded at a depot unless you have asked for storage.

Delivering to Dutch homes

Dutch homes bring their own challenges. In Amsterdam and other old cities, tall canal houses have steep, narrow stairs. Large furniture often goes in through the front windows instead, lifted by the hoisting beam on the gable or by a mobile furniture lift. We plan for this in advance, and we arrange a lift where it is needed.

Parking is the other big issue. Many city centres have little space for a removal vehicle, and some streets need a permit or exemption from the municipality before a van can stop to load. We check the rules for your street and help you apply in good time.

We drive to all parts of the country. That takes in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, Eindhoven and Maastricht, and all the towns in between.

Customs and registration after Brexit

Household goods going from the UK to the Netherlands now pass through customs. If you are moving your main home there, you can usually import your belongings without paying duty or VAT. This relief generally applies when you have lived outside the EU for at least twelve months and have owned and used the goods for at least six months. You apply to Dutch Customs, the Douane, before the goods arrive.

You will need a detailed inventory of the load. We create it as we pack, with every box numbered and its contents listed. You will also need proof of your new Dutch address.

If you are staying for four months or more, you must sign up with your local council, the gemeente, soon after you arrive. Signing up gives you your citizen service number (BSN), which you need for work, banking and health care. The rules can change, so check the current rules for your own case before you book your move.

Packing, storage and moving back

We can pack everything for you, or just the fragile items, using strong boxes, furniture blankets and wrap. If your Dutch home is not ready yet, we can hold your belongings in secure storage and deliver when you are ready.

Moving the other way? We also handle removals from the Netherlands to the UK. For more on our service there, see our main Netherlands removals page.

Moving to the Netherlands from the UK: FAQ

How soon after collection will my things arrive in the Netherlands?

A dedicated move from London usually arrives the day after collection or within two days, depending on the crossing and your delivery town. Part-load moves take longer because the vehicle serves several customers on the way. We give you a delivery window when we quote, and we keep you updated while your goods are on the road.

Which is cheaper for a Dutch move, part load or dedicated?

Part load is usually cheaper because you only pay for the space you use on a shared vehicle. Dedicated costs more, but it gives you fixed dates and a vehicle that carries only your belongings. If you have a full house or tight dates, dedicated is often worth it. We can quote both so you can compare.

Can you get large furniture into an Amsterdam canal house?

Yes. Canal houses often have very steep, narrow stairs that a sofa or wardrobe cannot climb. In that case we hire a mobile furniture lift, which raises each piece up the front of the house and in through a window. We book it in advance and wrap each item well first. Tell us about the street, as parking by the canals is tight.

Do I pay import tax on my belongings?

Usually not, if you are moving your main home to the Netherlands and meet the conditions for transfer of residence relief. You apply to Dutch Customs before the goods arrive, with an inventory and proof of address. We check the current rules for you and help you get the papers ready in time.

Will the Dutch council need to approve where the van parks?

In many Dutch city centres, yes. Parking is tight, and the local council may need to grant a permit or reserve space for the van. We check the rules for your street and help you apply to the municipality in good time. This lets us park close to the door and keep the carry short.

How Your Move to the Netherlands Works

Every move starts with a survey, either at your home or by video call. We look at how much you have, any large or fragile items and how easy it is to get in and out of your home. From this, we give you a clear, written quote and agree the dates with you. If you are only moving a few things, we can often price the job from a list and some photos.

On packing day, our team wraps your furniture, packs your things into strong boxes and labels each one by room. We can pack the whole house, or just the fragile items if you would rather do the rest yourself. Beds, wardrobes and tables can be taken apart and then put back together in your new home.

If you do not need a whole van, a shared or part-load move can be a good way to save money. Your things travel with other loads heading the same way, and you pay only for the space you use. If you need a set delivery date, or you have a full house, a van just for you is the better choice.

Getting Ready for Delivery in a Dutch Home

Many Dutch homes, mostly in older city centres, have very steep and narrow stairs. Large furniture often cannot go up the stairs at all. Instead, it is lifted in through a front window. Some older houses have a beam and hook at the top for this, and removal firms also use a lift on the back of a van or a separate outside lift.

Tell us early about the floor you live on, the width of the stairs and the size of the windows. Photos of the front of the building are very useful. This helps us bring the right kit and the right size of team. It also helps us decide which items should be taken apart before they leave the UK.

Parking can be hard in Dutch cities. Streets are narrow, and there are many canals, bike lanes and trams. In many places you need a permit to park a removal van outside your home, and these are usually arranged through the local council. Check this in good time, and let us know if you need help working out what is required.

Keep a bag with you for the first few days. Pack your passport, travel papers, keys, phone chargers, medicines and a change of clothes. These should travel with you, not in the van, so you have what you need even before your furniture arrives.

Customs and Paperwork for a UK to Netherlands Move

Since Brexit, moving your things from the UK to the Netherlands needs customs paperwork. You will usually need a full list of the goods you are moving, a copy of your passport and proof of your new Dutch address. We help you prepare the list and send the right papers, so your goods do not get held up on the way.

If you are moving to live in the Netherlands, you may be able to bring your household goods in free of import duty under transfer of residence relief. This usually needs you to have lived outside the EU for a year and to have owned your things for at least half a year. The rules can change, so check the current rules with the Dutch customs office before you move.

Some items need extra care or are not allowed. These can include certain foods, plants, weapons and some medicines. If you are not sure about an item, ask us before packing day. It is far easier to sort this out in the UK than at the border.

We used Elite for our move from South London to Surrey and they were outstanding from start to finish. Communication before the move was excellent – every question was answered quickly and clearly, which gave us real confidence.

On moving day the team were brilliant: friendly, professional, and nothing seemed too much trouble. They worked efficiently, handled everything with great care, and made what could have been a stressful day feel easy.

Their quote also beat every other company we looked at, but the service felt premium throughout. It’s rare to find such good value and such high standards together. I’d recommend them without hesitation and would definitely use them again in the future.

I chose Elite Moving after reading many reviews from various moving companies across different review platforms. I also texting and called the contact person and asked a lot of questions about our move from London to Southern Spain.
Elite exceeding our expectations and special thanks go out to Vijithan as he was always prompt answering my questions and keeping us informed on the move as the date got closer. This is a family run business that does an excellent job of easing the stress of moving. We had a previous move in 2023 from California to UK/ London that was fraught with issues ( lost boxes, damage to expensive furniture etc., luckily we got extra insurance but it was still traumatic).
This is why I started my search many months ahead of our move date in late July 2025 which is advisable if you want to secure a date in the busy season and a better price.
Vijithan is a smart guy who knows the in and outs of this business and was prompt with correspondence on WhatsApp. I also talked to him on the phone a few times and he made me feel very comfortable trusting Elite with our belongings.
I packed our own boxes as I had some saved from 2023 move but also bought some boxes from Elite as their price and quality( double walled ) is much better then stores like B & Q and Amazon.
Elites crew disassembled our beds and wrapped and protected our furniture and ceramic large vases very well and with care. Moving day was long but went well and the crew was careful not to mark walls as they carried our furniture down the narrow Victorian stairwells.
We met the truck at the storage facility in Spain where our belongings are stored while we rent and look at houses.
We highly recommend Elite moving. Their prices are fair and competitive. They stay available from start to finish.
Note: Elite did not sub out any of the job and they have their own trucks with hard body sides.

Elite Moving provided excellent service in assisting me with my move last week, and they made the entire process as easy as possible. They have been outstanding from beginning to end. Before the move, the communication was excellent, so I knew precisely what to anticipate. They arrived on schedule, and the three guys were very careful with my furniture, especially my 75-inch television, to ensure no harm was done.
Elite Moving is highly recommended. Last but not least, they accomplish all of this at a very reasonable price. These are the persons you should contact if you need to relocate. 10 out of 10!
